Most Land Clearing Companies Have Zero Google Reviews. That’s Costing Them Jobs.
We manage marketing for 300+ land clearing and forestry mulching companies across the country. And one of the most common things we see? Operators who do incredible work — clear 10 acres of brush in a day, leave a property looking like a golf course — and have zero reviews online.
Meanwhile, the competitor down the road with half the equipment and half the experience has 47 Google reviews and gets the call first.
Reviews aren’t just nice-to-have. They’re one of the most powerful tools for closing more jobs — and most land clearing companies are completely ignoring them.
Why Reviews Matter More Than You Think
Here’s what happens when a property owner gets your quote and your competitor’s quote:
They Google both of you.
If your competitor has 30+ reviews with 4.8 stars and you have 2 reviews (or none), the property owner picks them — even if your price is lower. Reviews are trust signals. They answer the question every buyer has: “Is this company going to show up, do good work, and not rip me off?”
From our data across hundreds of land clearing companies:
- Companies with 20+ Google reviews have close rates 15-25% higher than companies with fewer than 5
- Before/after photos in reviews increase engagement by 3-4x — people want to SEE the transformation
- Google ranks businesses with more reviews higher in local search results — more reviews = more visibility = more calls
If you’re spending money on ads but have 3 Google reviews, you’re leaving jobs on the table. The leads come in, they Google you, and they go with the company that has proof.
How to Actually Get Reviews (Without Being Annoying)
Most operators know reviews matter. The problem is they don’t have a system for getting them. Here’s what actually works:
1. Ask Right After the Job — While They’re Standing on Clean Land
The best time to ask for a review is immediately after finishing the job. The customer is looking at their cleared property. They’re happy. They’re emotional about the transformation.
Say something like:
“Hey [Name], I’m glad you’re happy with how it turned out. Would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? It really helps us out. I can text you the link right now.”
That’s it. No speech. No pressure. Just ask and send the link.
2. Text the Link Within 10 Minutes
Don’t wait until tomorrow. Don’t email it. Text the Google review link while they’re still on-site.
To get your direct review link:
- Search your business on Google
- Click “Ask for reviews” in your Google Business Profile
- Copy the share link
- Save it in your phone — you’ll use it after every job
A text message with a direct link gets 5-10x more reviews than an email follow-up a week later. People open texts. They don’t open emails from contractors.
3. Take Before/After Photos of Every Job
This one is free and it’s a game-changer. Before you start cutting, take a photo from the road or driveway. After you’re done, take the same angle.
Why? Two reasons:
- You can include them when asking for reviews: “I took a before and after of your property — mind if I use it on our page?” This gives the customer a reason to look, engages them, and often prompts them to leave a review with the photos attached.
- You can use them in your own marketing: Social media posts, ad creative, website galleries. Before/after photos are the highest-performing content type for land clearing companies.
4. Follow Up Once (Not Three Times)
If they don’t leave a review within 24 hours, send ONE follow-up text:
“Hey [Name], just following up — if you have 30 seconds, that Google review would really help us out. Here’s the link: [link]. No worries if not. Thanks again for choosing us!”
One follow-up. That’s it. If they don’t do it after two asks, move on. You don’t want to be the contractor who nags about reviews.
5. Make It Part of Your Process — Not an Afterthought
The companies that consistently get reviews are the ones who build it into their workflow. Just like you take before photos, send invoices, and follow up on estimates — add “ask for review” to your post-job checklist.
If you have operators or crew leads, train them to ask. If you run a CRM system, set up an automated text that goes out 2 hours after job completion with the review link.
Consistency beats perfection. Getting 2-3 reviews per month adds up to 25-35 per year. In most local markets, that puts you in the top 3 for land clearing.
What Makes a Great Review (And How to Get Better Ones)
Not all reviews are created equal. A 5-star review that says “Great job” is fine. A 5-star review that says “They cleared 3 acres of thick brush and cedars in one day, showed up on time, left the property looking incredible, and the price was fair” is worth 10x more.
You can steer better reviews without being shady. When you ask, add a small prompt:
“If you could mention what we did and how the property looks now, that really helps other folks know what to expect.”
This naturally produces reviews with keywords like “land clearing,” “brush removal,” “forestry mulching” — which helps your Google ranking for those search terms.
How Reviews Connect to Your Speed to Lead
Here’s the full picture: A property owner searches “land clearing near me.” Your Google Business Profile shows up with 35 reviews and 4.9 stars. They call.
If you answer in under 5 minutes (speed to lead), give a solid estimate (estimate that wins), and follow up properly — you close the job.
Reviews are the first domino. They get the phone to ring. Everything else follows.
Responding to Reviews (Yes, Even the Good Ones)
Respond to every review. Every single one.
- Good reviews: Thank them by name, mention the specific work. “Thanks John! That cedar removal on your back 5 acres was a great project. Glad the property is exactly what you needed.”
- Bad reviews: Stay professional. Don’t argue. Acknowledge their concern and offer to make it right. Other potential customers are reading your response — your tone matters more than the original complaint.
Google’s algorithm also favors businesses that actively respond to reviews. It signals that you’re engaged and caring about customer feedback.
The Numbers: Reviews vs. No Reviews
From working with 300+ land clearing companies, here’s what we see consistently:
| Metric | 0-5 Reviews | 20+ Reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps visibility | Low (page 2+) | High (top 3 pack) |
| Trust signal on first impression | Weak | Strong |
| Close rate impact | Baseline | +15-25% |
| Organic call volume | 1-3/week | 5-15/week |
| Cost per lead (when running ads) | Higher | Lower (better landing page conversion) |
Reviews compound. The more you have, the easier it is to get more. Customers see 40 reviews and feel safer leaving their own.
Start This Week
You don’t need a marketing agency to get reviews. You need a system:
- Get your Google review link saved in your phone
- Ask every customer on-site after the job
- Text the link within 10 minutes
- Follow up once if they don’t leave one
- Respond to every review within 24 hours
Do this for 90 days and you’ll have 15-25 new reviews. In most local markets, that’s enough to dominate the Google 3-pack for “land clearing near me.”
